Opportunism

What does "understand" or not a middle-game position mean? or "scrambled"? (is that like familiar).
I would be curious for developments on that notion of familiarity. Maybe it is not verbalizable.

I like the whole game scenarios, but I am not sure to see how that related to the link to your puzzle dashboard.
The lack or relationship between opening play and game outcome? That it all boil down to something, that is not of the whole game scope, or that whatever whole game phases apparent omens or odds (known or perceived? or unfamiliar), there are ways to win that do not depend on that scope?
@dboing those fluffy terms make some sense to me, I can try to explain and others may differ.

A position is "understood" when one can "recognize" it quickly, and determine a good plan for it, possibly even "the right" plan ("objectively speaking"). Say, queenside majority, should push the majority. Opposite castles, should rush to attack the opponent castle. Piece ahead, must simplify and win endgame.
A middle game position is "not understood" if you are in it and go "uh. I don't know what I'm supposed to do here. Is d5 the right pawn break ? Are trades good for me ? Idk where this knight wants to be. Let's push g4 and see what happens. I wonder if the endgame would be good for me if we traded it all down."

@Toadofsky Loved the report :D and I'm glad you're suchly full of resources (can't win on the board ? appeal to the rules ! :D), and also self-aware - the mid-game realization of "those moves are going nowhere, let's mess it up instead"

Have you tried improving your opening game ? :D
> Piece ahead, must simplify and win endgame.

Depends on the stakes of winning versus exploring. I had to mention that, as annoying correspondence player outlier.
It feels like abstinence to me, about enjoying chess till the last iota of positional information to trade with.. (things I don't know about for the most part). But thanks I hear you.

Having plan imagination and refined enough evaluation perception given a position in one's face (and calculation breadth?). I agree, one can smile reading the blog. I just would like to know why the link as conclusion....

A few times, but never seriously enough. Eventually I discovered shogi and lost interest in competitive chess, despite knowing quite a bit about it at an amateur level.
