Science is not a religion the same way as religious texts are not scientific documents and the goal of the bible was never to describe the details and mechanisms of creation or the specific dates when this creation occurred.
Idiots like Richard Dawkins and other idiotic atheists are trying to make science deal with religious questions. Mostly as a reaction to other idiots coming from the religious side that were trying to read and analyse the bible literally as a scientific document. And both sides are equally guilty for this whole idiotic debate that only serves to generate mindless books and conferences so at the end of the day these professional intellectuals can put food on the table.
Science simply deals with investigation of the mechanisms (that God created if you wish) that make the world (which was also created by God if you wish) work. It doesn't try to give ultimate answers for the human condition, meaning of life, moral good or bad etc. It just investigates and models reality - nothing more.
And yes, evolution is indeed just a theory. If you wish it is a theory of how exactly God created life on Earth and what did he use in the process. How is this so hard to understand.

If you trace back the dates in the bible it is very clear that the earth is around 5 thousand years old. it gives no room for a billion year old earth...
