Lichess could solve this by making a system like Discord or X, where there is one unique handle and a display name. The current names can become unique handles and then users can have the names they want as display names.

And then display names are not unique anymore, and everything gets confused to the maximum.
Or the display names are unique, making good available names an even rarer find.

You can show the handle as well somewhere. Then it's not more confusing than on other places with the same system.

Sounds like more confusion, more administrative work, and more moderation work.
If you want to give your real name or something else, you can do so in the bio. If you want to lose your tracks, this will not work. We would just end up with another table of display names vs account names. And the names in the games database would also be a mess.
Sure, one has to be more diligent on initially picking a username. But it seems there comes very little extra benefit to justify the downsides. Or what is the main motivation?
