The best chessplayer of all times was Erwin Wackernagl from Biebelsried, who played on the 2nd February 1922 112 blindfold games simultaneously against himself and -believe it or not- won all 112. Soon after that success he decided to rest on his laurels.

I believe Fischer was the best of his time before computers were strong, and before Karpov. I hold the opinion that Karpov in his prime would have beaten Fischer, so would Kasparov, Krammnik Anand etc. The whole reason he invented 960 was because he foresaw computers taking over chess, which they have. I believe Kasparov went back over Fischers' games with an engine and found/ confirmed many blunders that would not be made today. Just like comparing athletes of different generations. How would Bill Russell do against Shaquille O'neil in their primes? No one knows, but I would bet Shaq would overpower Bill.
