2900

I always noticed that the sliders only go up to 2900 and I think hiimgosu was just the first to reach that number here. If someone goes above 2900 would that mean that no-one could see their games, or does it act as some cap which cannot be surpassed?
There is no any limit. He just stopped after achieving 2900 to enjoy this number. :)
I think you misunderstood the question Chesstroll. When you seek a game, you can set the rating slider to who you want to see your seek. He was asking if Aman would never see anyone's game seeks because 2900 is as high as it goes. If he gets anymore points, I would think that he won't unless some changes are made to the software.
There are soft limits, not sure exactly how they work. Rating will be kept between 800 and 2900 but can temporary overstep the boundaries, if I understand it correctly.

The actual number in itself doesn't matter, it is only it's value relative to the other player's ratings that do. A simplified example: If the best player on lichess is rated 2900, and another player joins lichess which is even better, then the first player's rating will drop a bit. This doesn't mean that they got worse, only that there is someone else in the pool with a higher number (is stronger).
flugsio, so you mean that when there appears somebody who has more than 2900, he will stay around it, but all another players' rating will go down. So, if one gets 2950, then refreshing happens, and he returns to 2900 and someone's rating, if it is 2015 now, will become, for example, 1980?
Interesting thing. :)
There is no 'refreshing' other than rating changes when finishing games. I assumed in this minimalistic example that these players actually play games with each other.

The other players ratings will go down because they lose to the more skilled player, for example 10 players go from 2900 to 2800 because they lose to this new strong player. These 10 players will now have the same rating as less skilled players, by winning against these 2800-rated players they will gain back some rating but the mainly the less skilled 2800 players will now go down to 2700.. and so on...

So yes, if there is a large increase in stronger players than yourself then your rating will probably go down. But there is always less skillful players joining, making the numbers go in the other direction.

Hopefully these ramblings cleared up my thoughts, but likely made it worse as I don't actually know how it works :)
In Glicko2, ratings are two dimensional - it's not only the value that matters, but also the RDs!

While your rating cannot go under 800 (or above 2900), successively losing (winning) will change your RD and you'll stick around that level more often.

And it's likely that the rating bar filtering excludes <800 and >2900, but by design of the rating system.
There definitely were players lower than 800

And I think it is possible to get higher than 2900 too, but not much, of course (unfortunately) maybe 2910-2915 is possible, not higher.

I think it is mistake to restrict high limit. Just think about what a player with 2900 should do? Play casual?

Maybe lichess will think about tweaking rating system somehow?

There should be opportunity for new strong players to make a new record.
I'm definitely planing on getting >2900 real soon now - so please fix that ASAP!!!!!!
I decide not to reach 2900 until this problem is fixed.
